We are grateful to those who continue to bring us clothing and other items to keep your packers busy. The goods we receive, whether in small numbers or larger batches, are generally of good quality and although we do have to discard some items such as those which have unacceptable slogans or military connotations, nevertheless, we have comparatively little waste. We know, too, that the items that do we send are still much appreciated by those who receive them in Romania.
The donation of these items to needy people is integral to maintaining the charitable status of our team in Dorohoi, which in turn qualifies them to receive and distribute the short-dated food from two local supermarkets. In the 5 months to the end of May, over 2,000 donations of food were given to people visiting the office, representing a shelf value of some £50,000.
We still have a quantity of sunflower seeds from last year’s crop on the warehouse land; perhaps enough to produce an additional 900 litres of oil. The oil is donated along with the food mentioned above. A local business will press these into oil, in return for a small proportion of the oil produced.
The weather in this area of northeasten Romania has resembled that more associated with an English summer – cool temperatures, heavy rain and strong winds. Thankfully, none of our principal buildings has been damaged but the polytunnel at Casa Neemia has suffered some tearing of its plastic sheeting. Nevertheless, the Casa Neemia team has decided to use it again in the hope that what remains will offer some protection for the tomatoes and peppers that have been planted. We also have vegetables
in outdoor plots, including a garden share with one of our neighbours.
The war in neighbouring Ukraine continues to have an impact on our activities. Most of our Ukrainian visitors have integrated well into the community at Casa Neemia but two, who have first-hand experience of the war, have continued to have complications arising from their experiences. This adds to the workload for our team and those friends who are trying to ensure they receive appropriate medical and administrative help.
