It is with sadness that we heard of the passing of one of our loyal supporters in south Wales and we send our condolences to his family. Many people in Romania have benefitted from the efforts of this family, not just in the preparation of clothing but in other aspects of our work there. May God comfort those who are mourning.
In south Wales our packers are taking a short break before resuming their efforts; in Horley the packing team will continue to meet on the first and third Friday of each month throughout the summer.
In Romania the distribution of food, clothing and other household items continues. Recently we received 1 ton of potatoes from a local source; these potatoes are being shared with needy people, alongside the daily food collections from two local supermarkets and a bulk supply of snacks provided by the Romanian National Food Bank. In June the shelf value of the supermarket food was more than £9,600.
As in previous years we have been offered sponsorship for approximately 50 children to attend the summer camp at Voronet. The camp is located at the eastern edge of the Transylvanian mountains and offers 5 days of fun and fresh-air exercise. The children come from needy homes or where their parents are unable to afford a family holiday. In Romania the summer school break is nominally some 90 days; historically this period meant that the pupils and teachers could help with the summer harvest but despite the transition away from agriculture there is still enthusiasm for the long holiday. Having said that, sending the children to camp does allow the parents a time of respite too.
Several of our regular supporters and staff have suffered health issues during the past few weeks, and we pray for a speedy recovery for them. The two Ukrainians that we mentioned in last month’s notes are responding to care and are progressing well.
