News from Asociatia Neemia, November 2026

In the UK our teams have continued with their regular activities, receiving donated items and preparing them for onward transport to Romania. It has been our experience over many years that we receive summer items during the winter months and winter items at the beginning of summer. The chillier weather signifies the onset of winter and this means that our team in Romania now needs to break into the stocks of warmer clothing and bedding that were received during the summer.

Tariffs applying to goods imported into Romania are intended to address a surplus of Chinese goods undermining local products. The tariffs have been amended recently and we are waiting to see if this will have any impact on our operations.

It is with sadness that we heard of the death of Ana Zamosteanu, our neighbour at Casa Neemia. Ana and her husband were the previous owners of the land on which Casa Neemia was built and Ana has allowed the residents of the house to extend their horticultural activities into a substantial area of her remaining land.

In co-operation with the Romanian national food bank we have continued to receive short-dated food from two local supermarkets. In addition, we have received some bulk supplies of surplus food and non-food items such as soft drinks, salt and toys. We ensure that perishable items are donated to our registered families as soon as possible.

There is a cost involved in collecting these items. Every evening a member of our team has to visit the two supermarkets; this requires a commitment of both time and fuel. However, during October the equivalent value of the supermarket food was over £9,000 and that of the bulk items was over £1,800; this makes the effort worthwhile.
