News from Asociatia Neemia, September 2026

As is common in much of the world, many people in Romania are suffering from a significant increase in the cost of living. This is compounded by the highest inflation rate in the EU countries, currently it is around 8% having fallen from 10% at the beginning of the summer. Political disputes and public dissatisfaction have led to the country missing economic targets set by the European Commission which in turn resulted in the country forfeiting vital funds intended for reconstruction. This, of course, has had an adverse effect on those whom we are seeking to help, using the resources available – primarily food and clothing – but our own increasing costs limit our ability to offer financial help.

In Romania the first Monday of September signifies the start of the new school year for students and pupils. For the teachers and auxiliary staff the work of preparing the school rooms and materials began during the previous week. Pupils are expected to provide most of their stationery, books and suitable clothing. The latter may or may not include a uniform, depending upon the individual school’s policy. Purchasing all these items can present parents with a hefty bill and, as in previous years, we anticipate requests for help with providing these items. We have received some donations of suitable items and we help insofar as we can.

We are grateful for a good relationship with those involved in administering the national food bank scheme. Throughout last month we continued to collect short-dated groceries from two local supermarkets. The total for August had a shelf value of approximately £8,200. This was shared with the Centre of Hope, Casa Neemia and some 220 households. This food is highly appreciated and it is not uncommon for the full supply to be donated each morning. The arrangement helps to reduce the potential food wastage at these shops.

Our teams on both Horley and south Wales report good quantities of items being received and forwarded to Romania. However, in both places, advancing years or health issues do affect their ability to inspect and pack the goods and more help would be appreciated.
