We are grateful for the continuing supply of clothing and bedding being offered to us. In Horley our packing team has had plenty to do, so much so that we have decided to continue through August, on the first and third Fridays of that month.
The distribution of clothing to those in need forms the basis of our operations in Romania – it is that which provides the charity status that allows us to maintain our wider activities there, such as qualifying for the food donations that we receive and certain other benefits.
Once again we want to thanks all those who contribute to the continuation of our mission to help those in need.
School is out. The summer holidays in Romania last from late June to early September. The reason for this long period is historic: the children were required to help bring in the harvest. Now that so much more of the population is focussed in urban areas there have been suggestions that this amount of time is excessive but there is resistance to any change because the long period allow families a greater choice of timing for their holidays.
Many Romanians who work abroad come back and use the time to work on their houses. This often means an increase in casual labour opportunities for some of our beneficiaries at this time of year, typically as building labourers or garden hands.
In the office we continue to grapple with the statutory accounting system that was introduced last year. It is incompatible with our established system, meaning that we cannot yet include the operational statistics as in previous years.
For our team in Romania the start of the summer holiday has become associated with the children’s camp at Voronet. Each year, some 50 children from our beneficiary families enjoy five days in the mountains, introducing them to an environment and a social interaction that they not have been familiar with previously. Once again we thank those responsible for the generous sponsorship that underwrote the camp this year.
